Green Goods: The Importance of Superior Joinery

Friday, June 13, 2014 | Reader Comments | Joiners

Green Goods

Like many of you, Brian Robertson's first Festool power tool was the TS 55 Track Saw. Brian is the co-owner of Green Goods, an environmentally friendly building supply store, focusing on interior products. He immediately recognized the quality, efficiency and cleanliness gained through the use of the TS 55 and its potential to offer him a competitive advantage.

Based on his positive experience with the TS 55, Brian sought out Festool's solution for joinery when he had a project requiring assembly that could not be easily done with the traditional methods: pocket hole screws, biscuits or dowels. Shortly after beginning to use the FestoolDomino Joiner, he found other uses for it that increased productivity, such as table tops. With the Domino Joiner, he was able to assemble table tops three to four times faster than using a biscuit joiner.

Brian says he works hard for his tools, so he wants his tools to work hard for him. That's why he chooses Festool. Watch this video of Brian sharing his experiences with his Festool power tools, including the Domino Joiner.

Azure Furniture Co.: A Solution to Beetle Kill Pine

Thursday, May 22, 2014 | Reader Comments | Joiners

Azure Furniture Co.

In the Colorado Rocky Mountains, there are over 3.3 million acres of woodland that has been killed by a beetle infestation. The beetles burrow into the bark of the trees laying their eggs, and in the process a fungus carried by the beetles infect the trees. The fungus ultimately kills the tree and turns it's grain into a blue-grey color. So what do you do with all of these dead trees that are discolored, an eyesore on the landscape, and a fire hazard?

Beetle Kill Pine

Corbin Clay recognized this problem and formed the Azure Furniture Company. He thought, "why cut down live trees when there are so many standing dead?". And so began their mission: To provide a creative solution to millions of acres of dead trees in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

For 4 years, he and his team have been producing timeless furniture from solid beetle kill pine reclaimed from these forests. In their designs, they go back to what is the essence of good furniture: impeccable craftsmanship, quality materials, timeless design. Every product is carefully handcrafted in their own workshop in Denver, CO.

Festool is proud to be a part of what Corbin is doing and shares a passion for coming up with creative solutions to challenges, ambassadors of the new way of doing things. Watch this video of Corbin talking about his crusade to tackle the problem of beetle kill pine.

Robby Myer - Building Doors the Easy Way

Thursday, May 22, 2014 | Reader Comments | Joiners

This is Carpentry

Check out this video and accompanying in-depth article by Robby Myer and Gary Katz fromThis is Carpentry demonstrating the process for constructing a custom door.

In this video, Gary Katz is in the process of building doors and gates for his new shop location. He takes a couple of minutes at the beginning of the video to talk about his experiences with the Domino Joiners and then goes to visit Robby Myer of Architectural Wood Products to see how he builds his custom doors.

Robby goes through the process of laminating his rails and stiles, followed by marking and mortising his joints with the Domino XL Joiner. Robby then uses the Festool OF 2200 Router to rout a groove for his door panels. The Domino allows small shops like Robby's to produce faster, strong mortise and tenon joinery in a fraction of the time of other joinery methods.

For a more detailed overview of the entire process, read the illustrated article on the This is Carpentry website.

10mm Domino Tenon 13/16" (21mm) Dowel
12mm Domino Tenon 15/16" (24mm) Dowel
