AWFS 2011

Festool provides tools for the smartSHOP in the WorldSkills competition at AWFS 2011.

WorldSkills is an international career technical education training organization. Students from countries around the world compete for gold medals and recognition in their field of training. The Qualifying Trial held at AWFS determined who will compete in WorldSkills Leipzig (Germany) in 2013. The finalists competed for three days during the AWFS Fair while show attendees watched the students build projects showcasing their cabinet construction and woodworking skills. The intent was to increase awareness of SkillsUSA and emphasize the importance of skilled trades to the future of the industry.

Two students vied for the chance to represent the U.S. at WorldSkills 2013: SkillsUSA National High School Gold Medallist Daniel Berrios, from Bethlehem Vo-Tech School in Bethlehem, PA; and a second contestant, the winner of the 2011 cabinetmaking contest at the National Leadership and Skills Conference, June 19-24 in Kansas City, MO.

The smartSHOP, a fully operational cabinet shop on the exhibit floor, showcased “Simplicity in Automation for the Small Shop” and featured many Festool power tools including the Kapex SCMS, Domino joiner, ETS 125 Sander, OF 1400 Router, CT 26 Dust Extractor. For attendees that have ever been intimidated by the vast field of woodworking machinery visible at the show, smartSHOP brings automation down to scale for the modest size shops. SmartSHOP will let visitors see how to take less time to do more, with the ease and sophistication of precision tools designed for a small shop environment.

Congratulations to Daniel Berrios, a graduate of Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School in Bethlehem, Penn. won the WorldSkills Cabinetmaking Qualifying Trial at AWFS Fair and will represent the United States at the 2013 WorldSkills Competition in Leipzig, Germany. Kaydee Walters from Tooele High School in Tooele, Utah, was Berrios’ formidable competitor. She will continue her training in the cabinetmaking program at Utah Valley University this fall.

A special thanks to SkillsUSA for allowing Festool to help sponsor this great event and to bring this craft into the spotlight for future generations of woodworkers.
